iPod to Bass Boost cMoy v1.48 headphone amplifier to Car Stereo: Infinity Kappa 6.5in components, Infinity Perfect 12.1 sub, JBL BP600.1 sub amp, crappy 4×75W RMS speaker amp. I couldn’t get too close or the camera mic would distort.

Hmm, not bad, I was directing it at you but saying that you have a different car, what you got I agree is pretty good. On the subject of protecting your hearing, you can get a dB alarm, a device that turns on the red light when the sound level goes over 100dB or at a set level, Refer to “Pimp my car,” with the MTX Jackhammer 22″ sub. That way the only time you are reaching ear damaging levels is when you show it off to your mates… or that unsuspecting group on the street… Heeheee!!!!

That’s pretty solid advice, though I’m not sure who it was directed towards (myself or “wesdan10″).
I sold this car last year. The setup was always decent, but my new system makes the one above sound like a joke:
Boston Acoustics 6.5″ components and 6×9’s powered by a killer amp, and dual 10″ Infinity Perfect subs (same amp). Over 1000W RMS total. I have to restrain myself from turning the volume up…realized earlier this month I’ve done some serious hearing damage in the past 6 months.

You can invest in a …
You can invest in a much bigger amp, just calibrate the amp to the speakers so that you dont overload them, until you can later afford better speakers, ie. step by step upgrades. Besides, it is better to have bigger amps than your speakers because you can achieve maximum drive without amp distortion (amp distortion is worse than minor driver overload) Unless you are unhappy with your setup and want to enter SPL competitions, your setup is pretty good, enjoy what you got.

I wouldn’t bother …
I wouldn’t bother with *any* decent speakers unless you have an amp. These Kappa components are rated 90W RMS. A stock head unit won’t even deliver 1/4 that (it might say it can, but it won’t…). Give them juice, or save your money.

kan you just run these off of a headunit? or do you really need an external amp? i know that they would be better with one but would they be ok without one?
