What is most important? Speakers, or the cd player? I dont want alot of bass, so I dont think I need an amp or huge boombox type speaker.
I have a surround sound home theatre system has beautiful sound with cds. I want my car to sound the same, cuz compared to the home theatre system my car sound all muffed and low and unclear. What do I need to do"?
Start off with getting a nice headunit alpine got the award for clearest cd players..

preferably you need both. dont go cheap either. and amp will still be very helpfull to provide crisp and clear sound with no distortion. but if you were goin to pick just one i would go with new speakers.

start with the speakers, factory speakers are usually garbage.
Getting a new head unit will work wonders as well. But, if you want the lows, you’re going to want a sub or two. Speakers just cant deliver the lows that some people are looking for.
^he is right, more money really does make a world of difference and an amp will keep the sound nice and consistent

i have found that if you want clarity and not much bass turn your mids way down along with you lows and bring out your highs until you desired clarity is reached. you must have a good head unit to fine tune it. if you do and it allows you to adjust all you equalizer, do it, don’t rely on factory presets. set it up to your ears. if you do not have a good head unit i would suggest a higher end pioneer or alpine. same goes with the door speakers, alpine does make a better door speaker i believe. i have type s as a replacement in all locations in my car and i love them. they are about a perfect match with average power head unit. you must have rms wattage in even comparison with the head unit and speakers, or in other words have them matched with each other. if you have a 50watts rms head unit for example get speakers that are also this much. it is far more accurate to set up a system with rms wattage vs max wattage. i would suggest a place on line called onlinecarstereo.com they have pretty hard to beat deals on pretty much everything you need.

My suggestion would be to go to a car audio competition and look at some of the systems that are in the sound q booth . You will find that most have the best of everything from high end speaker wires to high quality amps . But one of the most important things is speaker placement( Imaging ) . You can also cheat this with signal processors . look up I.A.S.C.A or U.S.A.C on a search engine that may help you.
