I’ve heard of a system of doubling your bet every time you lose, until you win. Then reverting back to a minimum stake, and repeating the process. Seems like eventualy, inevitably it will fail …
Is there a near-perfect system, especially one for the online casinos?
There is NO "system".
The odd are 35 to 1 .
Invariably the Casino wins .
If you’re on a roll – play with your surplus.
When play is against you – Bail out.

The only perfect Roulette System is not to play as the only winner is the casino.

Nope. In the long run the house always wins.

The doubling bet would, I think, work if there weren’t the greens on the wheel.
If you look at the wheel, there are 18 black, 18 red, 1 green. Assume you bet x on black. If you win you double your money (ie get your bet of x and gain another x), you lose if not.
There are 18 of the 37 slots you can win on, and 19 you can lose on. So, at each round, your expected winning is 18/37 times x minus 19/37 times x. Hence, with every bet, you can expect to lose 1/37 of what you bet.
Similar arguements hold for other possible bets and for american style wheels.
All casino games are designed so that in the long run they gain money, ie you lose. How else could they afford to run? The house will always win in the long run

THE ONLY WAY TO BET ON ROULETTE IS EITHER BLACK OR RED.
PLACE 60% OF STAKE ON ONE COLOUR ,AND 30% ON THE OTHER COLOUR.
WITH THE EXTRA 10% PLACE A BET ON WHATEVER NO. TAKES YOUR FANCY.

There is no effective long term system on roulette. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar that is probably just trying to get your money.
The only way to win is luck, period. If you feel lucky, you can find great online casinos with roulette at http://www.ranked-online-casinos.com/roulette-online-casinos.html

If there were a ‘perfect’ system for beating roulette, casinos would no longer offer the game.
As for the double-up-when-you-lose, you’ve change the game from "I’ll bet 1 and win 1 if I win" to "I’ll bet 64, and win 1 if I don’t lose 7 in a row".
I’ve done the math, and the math says you’re better off going all in on the first bet, rather than trying to grind out a win like this.

Mike Caro (noted gambling and poker expert) has a system which will not give the player an edge, but it WILL reduce the house edge from 5.26% to 0%. Here’s how it works:
Don’t bet red or black, or odd or even.
Don’t bet zero or double zero, either.
All odd red number bets are bad, so avoid them too. And avoid the black even number bets.
Exclude the number 30 and the group of consecutive numbers that begins with 11 and continues clockwise to and including 14.
Of course, if you follow the instructions exactly, all bets are eliminated, which is the only way to reduce the house edge on this game. All other roulette systems are wishful thinking.

There is no perfect system. I have been a dealer, and still involved with ‘casino’. Actually, 6m in front of me i have a roulette wheel on my lounge floor, if there was a system …i would have found it.
